EQC denies payout freeze for TC3

Ferrymead-Brookhaven Residents' Association chairman David Stringer said 17 neighbours had contacted him frustrated at delays.

He was in the same position, he said, with a quake-damaged house that had been declared a rebuild and no reason for an EQC payment to be delayed.

"There's no valid reason for them to withhold the payment,'' he said.

"You ring up the settlements teams in Australia or Wellington and they tell you point-blank, 'No, you're not being paid until that [foundation design] work's been done'."

  1. fortunately we have been paid out by EQC 6 months ago. Just waiting for the land evaluation. Heard that the dig did not strike rock even after 20 metres. Can anyone confirm this?

  2. EQC are holding people hostage to situations way beyond the average property owners control. For those with mortgages and upcoming renewels the future is also a worry. The banks have increasing concern about the TC3 category and some are requiring a much greater level of equity. While the bank has the opportunity to make demands at renewal time, it often puts the owner in an impossible situation.
The supposed 'Green is ready to go' is one of the most absurd statements announced. The reality is a great deal of Christchurch has proven to be unsafe and uneconomical to build on. Trying to remediate much of that land is ridiculous, it's nothing short of building a house in a giant blender of slurry and turning the switch on every now and then. It's time to wake up and convert much more of the area to parklands etc and move forward to better ground. Pretty simple stuff really, a lot more economical and offers future equity security. Playing around with conceptual ideas for years whilst side stepping reality is tortuous for many. Much of the current behavior is actually mad.
